Rev. Dr. Mark Koschmann

Rev. Dr. Mark Koschmann serves as Vice President of Faith and Ministry and Chief Mission Officer. He serves on the Executive Leadership Team and is responsible for assisting the University in maintaining a strong institutional mission and identity as a Christ-centered Lutheran university. In his role, he oversees CSP Ministry and Church Relations and serves as the Chairperson for the Department of Theology and Ministry. Dr. Koschmann leads a seminar on Lutheran Higher Education for all faculty and staff which emphasizes the integration of Christian faith and learning across the institution.

Since joining Concordia’s faculty in 2015, Dr. Koschmann has designed and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in various subjects related to Lutheran Theology, the New Testament, Christian mission and outreach, and urban ministry. Until his appointment as chairperson for the department, he served as the Fiechtner Chair in Christian Outreach and Assistant Professor of Theology and Ministry. He also directs the Solus Christus Fellows program (a student-focused, mentoring program of CSP’s Hoffmann Institute).

Prior to coming to CSP, Dr. Koschmann served as the Associate Pastor of Missions at Chapel of the Cross – Lutheran in St. Louis, MO. He has a B.A. in Philosophy from Valparaiso University, a M.Div. from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University. His scholarly research on twentieth-century religion, race, and urban history examines how Protestant and Catholic congregations adapted to the changing urban environment from the post-World War II era to the present. Currently, he is researching how Christianity thrived in urban contexts in the New Testament and early church. He also speaks frequently on Law and Gospel Theology and topics related to the challenges and opportunities of Christian higher education.

Dr. Koschmann assists his congregation, Jehovah Lutheran Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, as a pastor, liturgist, and bible study teacher. He and his wife, Dr. Kara Koschmann, have three children.
