English Language Proficiency

English Language Proficiency

for International and Non-International Students

Success in your program is contingent upon your proficiency in the English language. We have a number of ways that you can demonstrate this proficiency and be accepted to the University if English is not your primary language or you have not attended an institution where English is their primary language.

Undergraduate Programs

Students applying to one of our Undergraduate programs can demonstrate that they are English proficient by completing one of the following. Additionally, all applicants should meet any program-specific requirements that are required prior to being accepted to that program.

  • You are exempt from the English Language Proficiency requirement if you meet one of the following criteria:

    • Completion of a U.S. high school diploma.
    • Completion of at least 20 credits from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
    • Completion of an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in the U.S., English-speaking Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand.
    • If English is your native language and your country of origin is included in the following list:
      • Anguilla
      • Antigua/Barbuda
      • Australia
      • Bahamas
      • Barbados
      • Belize
      • Bermuda
      • British Guyana
      • Canada (Except Quebec)
      • Cayman Islands
      • Dominica
      • Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)

      • Grenada
      • Guam
      • Guyana
      • Ireland
      • Jamaica/other West Indies
      • Kenya
      • Liberia
      • Montserrat

  • An IELTS, PTE or TOEFL must have been taken within two years of submission of your application to CSP. Applicants who have scores that are more than two years old (or will be more than two years old at the time of enrollment) may be requested to submit updated test scores or demonstrate English proficiency through one of the other listed options.

    Test of English as a Foreign Language | TOEFL
    Score of at least 59 (iBT). CSP’s institutional code is 6114. CSP only accepts electronic copies of the TOEFL score report.

    International English Language Testing Systems | IELTS
    Overall band score of the academic test of at least 5.5 or higher. General training exam not accepted. No institutional code is needed.

    Pearson English Language Test | PTE
    Minimum score of 46

    Duolingo Language Test
    Minimum score of 90

    ACT or SAT
    Minimum ACT or SAT requirements to the University

    International Test of Language Proficiency | iTEP
    Minimum score of 3.5

  • Atlanta English Institute | AEI
    Completion of Level Seven

    Spring International Language Center | SILC
    Completion of Level Six

    English Language Schools | ELS
    Completion of Level 109 and an IELTS test score of 5.5 or TOEFL iBT of 59 or completion of Level 112

    Minnesota English Language Program | MELP
    End of term assessment of 520 or higher

    West African Examination Council | WAEC
    Students applying from West African countries may send their West African Senior Secondary School Certificate results. Results must be requested and sent directly to Concordia University, St. Paul by WAEC. A minimum score of C4 is required.

Graduate Programs

Students applying to one of our Graduate programs can demonstrate that they are English proficient by completing one of the following. Additionally, all applicants should meet any program-specific requirements that are required prior to being accepted to that program.

  • You are exempt from the English Language Proficiency requirement if you meet one of the following criteria:

    • Completion of an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in the U.S., English-speaking Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand.
    • If English is your native language and your country of origin is included in the following list:

  • Spring International Language Center | SILC
    Completion of Level Six

    English Language Schools | ELS
    Completion of Level 112

Doctorate Programs

Students applying to one of our Doctorate programs can demonstrate that they are English proficient through the program-specific requirements.

  • An IELTS or TOEFL must have been taken no longer than two years prior to the student’s start date at CSP. Applicants who have scores that are more than two years old (or will be more than two years old at the time of enrollment) may be requested to submit updated test scores or demonstrate English proficiency through one of the other listed options.

  • The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy requires minimum passing scores on the Internet-based TOEFL for foreign-trained physical therapists seeking US state licensure and have broken it down by individual test scores:

    • Writing: 24
    • Speaking: 26
    • Reading: 21
    • Listening: 18
